Project Summary

Line 14 SEP-II

Client: Lakehead Pipe Line Co.

Location: Wisconsin-Illinois

This project began on March 1, 1996 and extends over 460 miles through Wisconsin and Illinois.

L. W. Survey conducted a helicopter reconnaissance of the proposed route to create a preliminary design with options.

Viewing the route from the air allowed us to note any encroachments on the pipeline and avoid any obstructions that would divert the line or raise concerns on a landowner’s property.

A final flight was made once we had completed the preliminary design to review obstructions.

Lakehead Pipeline Line 14 SEP II is a line 24" in diameter that runs from Superior, Wisconsin to Joliet, Illinois. The project did not have eminent domain through the state of Illinois and right of way had to be purchased for 109 miles, causing many reroutes. By using GPS technology, the necessary changes were accomplished rapidly.

GPS control was established every four miles along the route for geographical information and translated to state plane coordinates for future reference. All surveying data has been gathered using collectors, laptop computers, communications through Internet access and the latest in survey field equipment.
